The Tower Museum

towermuseumderry.jpgThis award-winning museum, opened in 1992, tells the tangled story of Derry from its origins in the 6th century right up to the present day using high technology and modern audio-visual presentation methods. Just inside the city walls, a 16th-century tower house built originally for the local Gaelic chieftains, the O'Donnells, was recon structed to house the museum. The many facets of the city's troubled history are impartially told and include the Siege of Derry in 1688-89, events in Ireland leading to partition in the early 1920s and the more recent troubles in Derry, including the 1969 battle of the Bogside. Derry had a civic museum from 1903 to 1951 and the Tower Museum is an admirable successor.
