The Orchard Gallery, on Orchard Street, was opened in October 1978 by the City Council with assistance from the Arts Council for Northern Ireland. The Orchard Gallery's primary activity is initiating and presenting exhibitions of contemporary and traditional art and craftwork by local, national and international artists. It frequently arranges tours of these exhibitions to other British and Irish galleries and also organises a comprehensive parallel programme of related arts events, such as small theatre events, films, workshops and lectures. The gallery houses, and circulates on loan, prints and paintings from the North-West Arts Trust and Arts Council collections as well as the beginnings of a Civic Collection.
